Unique Travel Experiences: Learn With Locals In Bali

About a purposeful way of getting to know your next destination, giving back to the community and expanding your horizon

Visiting a faraway country is always exciting. More so, when you get the chance to dive into a foreign culture. Traveling teaches you about the world, the people in it, to escape your comfort zone, and try new things.

One Bali babe took the idea to heart. It all started back in 2015 when a bright young woman called Ulla was sitting in her parents living room, writing her BA thesis on a clever idea that would innovate Airbnb’s business model.

Her plan was to give local people a chance to create new sources of income while helping tourists and expats experience their destination in new and meaningful ways.

Originally, Ulla’s plan was to use the idea of Learn with Locals to land the job she had always wanted

She had to be turned down by her “dream-employer” Airbnb for not one or two, but 12 TIMES before she decided to take faith into her own hands.

Ulla chose the path of entrepreneurship over chasing down a job that was never meant for her and started to take action. She moved to Bali and started a business that would soon become her new passion project.

She got in touch with creative and talented locals who can offer unique cultural experiences from design, photography and street art, to ethnic food tours, private dinners, beer tastings and underground history, sightseeing and immersive cultural exchanges.

The best part: Instead of selling experiences that are too expensive or just about average, Learn with Locals would offer the opportunity to connect with Indonesians while learning a new skill for a super affordable price in a welcoming feel-good atmosphere – often in one of the many stylish coffee shops in and around Canguu and Ubud.

“I think most people truly want to have life-fulfilling experiences, not only at home but also when they travel and they are seeking travel experiences that closely align with their own personal values.

I believe this is the future of traveling and something that I truly want to touch upon by starting Learn With Locals – so that we can allow people to reach for personal fulfillment and enriched lives, through experiences, connections and learning.” Ulla, founder of Learn with Locals

Why is learning a new skill while traveling a brilliant idea?

Traveling is not just a journey to new places in order to get that next Instagram-worthy photo. At least it shouldn’t be. And if you don’t agree with that, then feel free to stop reading here, as you and I will probably not be on the same page with what I will now say.

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.” – James Michener

Traveling is a journey of inner transformation, of finding yourself along the way. Traveling challenges you to leave your comfort zone and gives you the chance of re-inventing yourself. It’s the perfect time to get into a new habit, start eating healthier or learning a new skill as you are breaking out of old routines and making room for a new you.

Joining one of the many fun classes by Learn with Locals is a wonderful way to start that inner transformation and make friends with the same interests.

There are perfect learning experiences for everyone: Food photography, making your own lace bra, learning to brew the perfect cup of coffee, preparing eco-friendly skin-care or cooking authentic Balinese food or learning to build a website from scratch. See whats on this month here.

This past weekend I had the pleasure to meet Canti, a Bali-based tarot card reader and jewelry-maker who joined Ulla’s family of passionate locals. Canti, the founder of Foxglove Tarot, helps her clients on their path of empowerment with a self-love crash course that brings out the best in them. And that’s just how I felt during the class she held.

Learn with locals and make new friends along the way

Canti taught me and a bunch of other curious souls from all over the world to not only read and understand the birth charts she provided us with, but also showed us how to use that knowledge to make our own lucky charms: Astrology bracelets that are fitted to your personality and crafted by your own creativity!

I had a wonderful morning and am more than grateful for the opportunity to learn so much about the way the stars and planets in our solar system influence my personality and spiritual path.

Learning how to read a natal chart changed my life and it can do the same for you too. The insight and wisdom available in our birth chart are truly breathtaking once we know how to decode it.

Learning With Locals in Bali - Astrology and Birth Chart
Canti from Learn with Locals provided each and every participant with a birth chart. This is mine!

The lines and symbols that form an astrological chart reflect the patterns and order of the universe as it impacts us in our everyday lives. Our birth chart reveals our personality, the qualities we need to develop and those we need to let go our strengths and challenges, gifts and graces.

I wear my self-made bracelet with a lot of joy as it reminds me of a beautiful experience in one of the places that have shaped my more than most others.

Thank you Bali, thank you Canti and Ulla, thank you Learn with Locals!

I can not wait to join the next class, learn a new skill and make long-lasting memories.

Best, Jen May
