Vegan Minimalist Do It Yourself Skincare & Cosmetics

Vegan Minimalist Do It Yourself Skincare & Cosmetics

Let’s talk about vegan do it yourself skincare recipes for a minimalist routine, using natural ingredients only. Because we want to be gorgeous and cruelty-free anywhere, anytime – even and especially when traveling.

These tips will get under your skin – quite literally!

Let me preface this: I am far from being an expert in skincare questions. But I’ve received a lot of emails and requests to share information about my beauty & skincare tips, especially while I am on the road.

We all face the same problems: The stuff that we usually buy at home isn’t available or very expensive when we are abroad. So, I’m going off the path a little to share a post on vegan do it yourself skincare and cosmetics!

This is also a great article for everyone not on the road, but simply with an interest in natural skincare… So keep on reading even if you are currently enjoying the comfort of your own nest.

Traveling and maintaining a decent skincare is tough. Not only for the budget travelers amongst us. Should you be looking for natural skincare at reasonable cost, I got you covered!

I'll show you how to make:
  • All natural deodorant (it works!)
  • A 3-ingredient toothpaste
  • Organic vegan teeth whitener
  • Natural vegan shampoo made with 2 ingredients
  • A miracle hair-mask
  • Soothing raw cocoa coconut face mask
  • Olive oil & sea salt face peeling and body scrub
  • Renewing coffee coconut face peeling and body scrub

Organic, vegan and affordable skincare – it’s possible!

Let’s get something straight first: I believe that the best thing you can do to look great, is to be eating healthy!

I know it can be a challenge when you are traveling. But a vacation is not a reason to forget what is good for you. You want to feel and look great all the time too, don’t you?

Your skin is a reflection of the food you put into your body. Nourish it with fresh vegetables, greens, fresh fruits, nuts, avocados, seeds, whole-grains, legumes and it shows in our skin. Processed foods and animal products don’t deliver anything living or rejuvenating to your skin. Eat as close to nature as possible! You'll be rewarded with radiant skin, beautiful hair and strong nails.

Now let’s talk about what I would refer to as my…

Vegan Minimalist Skincare

I don’t use a lot of products, as I found this is what works best for me. Less is more, is as so often the best approach. I only use natural products that are all vegan, cruelty free & from companies that I love and trust.

Minimizing and becoming aware of what I am actually putting on my face and body, improved my skin visibly… Besides the effects going vegan already had: No acne, less breakouts & an even skin tone. YAY!

However, on the road I eventually come to the point where I run out of my favorite products… But there is a simple solution: Making your own with natural ingredients available in most countries  we are traveling to!

These are my favorite Vegan Minimalist Skincare recipes!

Natural Deodorant

The two magic ingredients are baking soda and and plain coconut oil! Now, it might take a little bit longer to make this than going to the store would, but it is also way more cost effective, especially since organic store-bought products without all the chemicals can be quite pricey.

Be aware: Some people get a rash from baking soda, so test this on a small area of skin first.

Natural Deodorant Ingredients

  • 6 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup organic cornstarch

Natural Deodorant Instructions

  1. Mix baking soda and arrowroot together in a medium sized bowl.
  2. Mash in coconut oil with a fork until well mixed.
  3. Add essential oils for scent if desired.
  4. Store in small glass jar or old deodorant container for easy use.
I however want to recommend a deodorant that works pretty well for me and smells like pure fruit salad, so if you aren’t into making your own, maybe try this one: i+m deodorant with grapefruit cent deodorizes softly but effectively with a composition of zinc, natron and coconut. The deodorant is sold in little glas jars, to avoid producing plastic trash (and no, I don't get payed for writing this, however I did receive PR-samples and am a genuine fan of the brand).

3- Ingredient Toothpaste

The easiest solution would be: Just dip your toothbrush in baking soda and brush like normal. Or you can dissolve it in water first and use the brine for brushing (just like the sea salt).

I prefer to use baking soda as a base for homemade tooth powder. You mix it with a few drops of peppermint essential oil and stevia to give your mouth a minty fresh feel. Add Coconut oil, for its antifungal and antibacterial properties come in handy for mouth cleaning.

Here is a great recipe for a vegan 3-Ingredient Toothpaste

3-Ingredient Toothpaste Ingredients

  • 6 tbsp coconut oil
  • 6 tbsp baking soda
  • 10 drops essential oil

3-Ingredient Toothpaste Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Whip it really well to give it a light creamy texture.
  2. Pour into a mason jar and seal it up until ready to use.

Natural Vegan Teeth Whitener

My secret to perfectly white teeth is activated charcoal. This stuff is pretty affordable and widely available. You can find it at drugstores (e.g., Walgreens and CVS), grocery stores, health and vitamin shops, and online. If you come across some, make sure to get your hands on it, because this stuff is pure magic and serves several purposes.

It removes stains & discolouration from the surface of your teeth, reduces gum inflammation, infection, protects against bad bacteria, remineralises teeth and eliminates bad breath for a brighter, healthier smile.

It is affordable, vegan and all natural. What more could you want? And this is how it works:

Activated charcoal is basically pure carbon. It’s made from wood, debris, peat, or other carbon sources (e.g., coconut husks). Activated charcoal’s tiny pores and immense surface area make it extremely adsorbent.

Activated charcoal carries a negative charge, so it attracts heavy metals and other toxins (which are usually positively charged).

Activated charcoal helps to detox, improves digestion, whitens teeth and is great for skincare. You can read more on how activated charcoal works and what it can do for your health in this article.

This is what I do for naturally white teeth!

It is easy as pie. Twice a week, I dip my dry toothbrush in the powder and then just brush my teeth as usual. Make sure to keep you mouth closed though, as you could easily cause a mess in your bathroom!

Vegan Shampoo

This is a super simple recipe that is ph-balanced, which means it has a ph lower than 7 – just like your body, whereas regular shampoo and soap often have a pH around 8-9.

This shampoo is made with coconut milk and aloe vera, which both are available in most parts of the world. The saturated fats of the milk help repair damaged hair amongst other things. And aloe vera is great for keeping the cuticles of your hair closed and healthy.

Natural Vegan Coconut and Aloe Vera Shampoo

Shampoo Ingredients

  • 1 can of coconut milk
  • 1 3/4 cups pure aloe vera gel

Shampoo Directions

  1. Mix both ingredients in a bowl using a wire whisk to fully incorporate.
  2. Pour mixture into ice cube trays. (I used two full trays.)
  3. Put in freezer and wait a few hours until frozen completely. At this point you can transfer them to some sort of bag or container, or just keep them in the trays.

How to apply

Take one cube out before you want to use it (at least the night before) and keep it in a small container or bowl in the fridge until you are ready to shower. Use as you would normal shampoo (about a quarter size amount).

Like all good things in life, a little goes a long way. I would also HIGHLY recommend using an apple cider vinegar rinse, especially if you experience that ‘waxy’ feeling after using this.

Place any remaining mixture back in the fridge to use next time you wash your hair. The shelf life of each cube is about 1 week in the fridge.

Pro Trip: I call this my MIRACLE HAIR MASK. I usually wash my hair in the morning to not look like a mop (I air-dry my hair). So what I do the night before, is giving a decent portion of coconut oil into my hair. And you might not want to do this, if you have a visitor staying over who you are still trying to impress, as the look it gives you... let's say it is special. You may also want to put a towel on your pillow. BUT the effect it has on your hair is well worth the hassle!!!!

Soothing Raw Cocoa Coconut Face Mask

Vegan Face Mask Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp bentonite or moroccan clay
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Vegan Face Mask Directions

  1. Blend all ingredients in a little bowl and apply to your face, leaving out eyes and mouth.
  2. Relax for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Use an old facecloth (stains!) to remove the mask by holding the cloth under warm running water, squeezing out the water and holding the cloth close to your face, to give it some good steam and warming it up. Wash off rest of the mask with cold running water. Pat dry, and apply a few drops your favorite facial oil.

Olive Oil & Sea Salt Face Peeling and Body Scrub

And that’s it… all you need for this one is an organic olive oil and a good sea salt!

Face Peeling Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Face Peeling Directions:

  1. Mix oil and salt together well and let the salt soak up the oil.
  2. Apply gently to your face or give yourself a wonderfully invigorating total body scrub in the shower or bath.
  3. Wash it off with warm water and end with a splash of cold. Pat your skin dry with a towel!

Renewing Coffee Coconut Face Peeling and Body Scrub

This coffee body scrub/face peeling also smells amazing! I am a die-hard coffee lover, so I am in heaven when I use it!

Body Scrub Ingredients:

  • 3 tbsp ground organic coffee
  • 1 tbsp organic sugar
  • 2 tbsp organic coconut oil

Body Scrub Directions:

  1. Melt coconut oil and allow it to cool but not solidify.
  2. Mix all ingredients together and let sit for a couple minutes.
  3. Apply gently to your face or give yourself a wonderfully invigorating total body scrub in the shower or bath.
  4. Wash it off with warm water and end with a splash of cold. Pat your skin dry with a towel!

That’s it! These are the simple tricks I rely on when traveling! Do you have similar recipes or more ideas? Share them with us!

I truly hope this will help you in your natural, cruelty-free skincare venture. I’d be happy to hear from you, especially when you try one or two of these.

Best, Jen May
